Coming back...

I never left poetry, simply left blogging about it.  Since 2007 poetry has enriched my life in a myriad of ways. As co-adviser of Beginnings, the SHS literary arts magazine, I introduce students to the wider poetry community by bringing  delegations to the Geraldine Dodge Poetry Festival and to the Columbia Scholastic Press Association conferences. Participating in the Dodge Foundation's annual "Spring and Fountain" professional workshops and the Rutgers Writing Project fuels my desire to share poetry through the SHS Annual April Poetry Festival which has  now become an established school wide celebration of poetry. So, now I'm back to my poetry blog thanks to an impromptu conversation I had with the supervisor of English today.  Thanks, Mary, for the reminder of how blogging can connect us especially in this segmented world. 

Billy Collins: Poetry 180: A Turning Back to Poetry

As Carol mentioned, Billy Collins' Poetry 180 is the inspiration for this blog. After reading the introduction to his anthology, I shared his idea of making poetry a part of everyday life here at Sparta High School with the Beginnings magazine staff. We brainstormed and came up with these possibilities: 1. Having a poem read each day as part of morning announcements 2. Adding a poetry page link to the MRC webpage. The short time for announcements made #1 impractical,so, I began working on #2 and began a poetry link to the mrc page. Now, I'm glad that I learned how easy it is to set up a blog! The interactive element of blogging will add so much to sharing and responding to poetry. So, instead of linking to a static web page, there will be a link to this blog on the the MRC homepage. As a tribute to Billy Collins I've posted animated versions of 2 of his poems. Enjoy!

April 1, 2007 marks the start of my ninth year as Sparta High School's media specialist! Since coming to Sparta in 1998, many staff members have given input on various media center matters. One of them , a former advisor of the SHS literay arts magazine, was passionate about breathing life into the poetry collection. As a former Englisn teacher who shared her appreciation of poetry, I immediately started purchasing fresh poetry volumes. During that first year, we became friends through poetry. At the same time, other staff members, lamented that poetry had taken a "back seat" in their lives because of the frantic pace of modern life, That is how in April 1999 the SHS Poetry Festival was born! April is both National Poetry Month and School Library Media Month, so it was perfect timing. The Poetry Festival started out as an open-lunch poetry reading for staff members in the MRC's small conference room. As the number of participants grew, the Poetry Festival moved to the main area of the MRC. Now, the Poetry Festival is open to the entire Sparta High School community. Faculty, students, parents and interested community members are invited to the MRC for lunch and poetry. The invitation states " Lunch is provided. Bring your original poetry or a favorite poem to share, or just come and enjoy!" This year the MRC will host the Ninth Annual Poetry Festival on April 20. I'm starting this blog so that our sharing of poetry is not limited to one day a year. I'll be posting "all things poetry". I'm looking forward ot your responses and related postings.
